Module 5 · Real Classroom Situations

Module 5 of 8 · Adaptability and safety

Respond to the situation—not the frustration

Your goal: make a safe, useful adjustment while protecting supervision and the learning goal.

If materials or technology fail

Pause any unsafe activity. Use an approved backup, pair students where appropriate, or demonstrate without the failed equipment. Keep the learning objective. Do not improvise with hazardous tools, chemicals, food, or equipment. Ask operations for guidance; tell site staff immediately when safety or site procedures are affected.

Four situations to rehearse

  • Student refuses: offer a supported choice or supervised alternative; never abandon or shame them.
  • Students become physical: stop the activity, call designated site staff immediately, give clear directions to create safe space, and protect the rest of the group. Do not put yourself into an unsafe confrontation.
  • Student needs the bathroom: follow the site’s approved escort/sign-out procedure. Coordinate explicitly with your co-leader, track who is out, and maintain supervision. If the procedure is unclear, ask site staff first.
  • Pickup is late or an unfamiliar adult arrives: keep the student supervised and involve site staff. Release only through the site’s authorized dismissal procedure.

Before any activity

Check the room, materials, tool instructions, applicable protective equipment, and the allergy/support information the site is authorized to provide. If the required safeguards are missing, stop that activity and get help.

Pause and practice

The projector fails just before class. What does an adaptable, professional response look like?

Check your response

Use a safe demonstration, physical example, drawing, or approved backup to teach the same goal. Explain the next step calmly, maintain supervision, and report the equipment issue through the appropriate channel. Do not blame the site or replace the session with unrelated free time.

Before marking this lesson complete: explain the response in your own words. If anything is unclear, ask onboarding@kodely.io before continuing. The practice reveal itself is not a scored answer or a recorded signature.
