Module 3 · How to Teach Any Lesson Strong

Module 3 of 8 · Teaching skills

Show it. Practice it. Check it.

Your goal: find out what students can actually do—not just whether they say “yes.”

A repeatable teaching routine

  1. Show: explain the goal and demonstrate one short step.
  2. Practice: have students try it with support.
  3. Check: ask them to show the step or explain it in their own words.
  4. Adjust: model again, simplify the instruction, or offer another way to participate.

Better checks for understanding

  • “Show me where this piece goes before you attach it.”
  • “Tell your partner what you will test and why.”
  • “Point to the safe place to put the tool when you are finished.”
  • “What would you change if the structure falls?”

Use speech, pointing, drawing, demonstration, or another appropriate response. Do not pressure a student to speak publicly to prove participation. Follow the support and accommodation instructions provided by the site.

When a student is stuck

Pause and observe. Ask which step is difficult, demonstrate that step, and let the student try again. Give specific feedback: “You tested one change at a time—that helps us understand what worked.” Avoid taking over the entire project.

Pause and practice

Everyone nods when you ask “Does that make sense?” but several students cannot start. What is the better check?

Check your response

Ask students to demonstrate the first step or explain it to a partner. Observe their responses, then reteach the unclear step before moving on. Nodding alone does not establish understanding.

Before marking this lesson complete: explain the response in your own words. If anything is unclear, ask onboarding@kodely.io before continuing. The practice reveal itself is not a scored answer or a recorded signature.
